WHO EIOS

A WHO system that searches open internet sources for early signals of outbreaks and other public health threats.

About

Epidemic Intelligence from Open Sources is used daily by governments and health organizations to detect and assess possible threats in near real time. By the end of 2025, 120 countries and 30 organizations and networks used the system, according to the WHO. In the African region, between 2018 and 2023, over 47 percent of health events reported to the WHO were noticed through this route before an official report arrived. An online signal is not a confirmed outbreak: epidemiologists must verify the source, context, and severity.

AI factor

Machine learning and automatic text analysis filter large streams of news, official publications, and other open sources. Public health experts assess the selected signals and decide whether investigation or action is needed.
