Whale Safe maps the presence of whales along busy shipping routes off California. An acoustic buoy uses a model to recognize species-specific calls. This data is combined with human observations, habitat models, and ship speeds. The public map and alerts help shipping companies and authorities weigh speed and route choices; compliance remains a human decision.
AI factor
Whales are often not visible from a ship. Automatic call recognition can listen continuously and select likely calls, after which validation and additional sources provide a more usable risk picture.
