TalkingPoints
A non-profit platform translates messages between schools and families in more than 150 languages and helps teachers write more clearly and accessibly.
About
TalkingPoints enables two-way communication between school staff and families even when they do not share a language or only use SMS at home. The translation combines education-focused AI models, glossaries, and support from human translators. In a study of more than 30,000 students across 71 schools in Tulsa, use of the platform was associated with about two extra school days in the observed spring period and 24 percent less absenteeism in the school years for which good comparison groups were available. The study used observational data and propensity-score matching, was led by a TalkingPoints researcher, and therefore does not prove an independent causal effect.
AI factor
AI translates messages in both directions and can suggest ways for teachers to make their text clearer and more action-oriented. The sender and recipient remain the conversation partners; human oversight remains needed for sensitive, urgent, or ambiguous messages.
