SurfPerch
An audio model makes thousands of hours of coral reef sound searchable faster for ecological research.
About
SurfPerch is a model originally trained for bird sounds and subsequently adapted for underwater recordings. Researchers use it to find recurring acoustic patterns and animal sounds in long reef recordings. A recent study shows that such embeddings can support ecological analysis. Sound is one source of information here and not an automatic, complete health diagnosis of a reef.
AI factor
Marine biologists collect far more audio than they can listen to manually. The model groups similar fragments and helps find interesting events; biologists link those patterns to species and ecological conditions.
