Signapse BSL Travel Information
AI converts current British rail information into videos in British Sign Language for deaf travelers.
About
Signapse developed a mobile app, with support from the British Department for Transport, that converts written rail information such as delays and platform changes into BSL. Network Rail provides BSL information at stations but reported in February 2026 that its screens use pre-recorded videos rather than AI-generated signs. Human interpreters remain needed for complex, sensitive, and two-way conversations, and the Deaf community must continue to assess quality and appropriate use.
AI factor
Translating and recording each change manually is too slow for current travel information. Language and video models can quickly produce approved information as BSL videos, with human interpreters and deaf language experts for training materials and quality control.
