Rori, from Rising Academies, delivers short math lessons, asks questions, and responds to each student's answer. The service runs over WhatsApp and is designed for low-cost devices and connections with limited bandwidth. A controlled study among students in eleven schools in Ghana found clear improvements in math scores after eight months of supplementary practice, with an effect size of about 0.36. This was the first study within a single school network; a larger randomized trial across varied school types is still underway.
AI factor
The conversational tutor interprets freely worded answers, provides personalized feedback, and determines which follow-up question fits best. Pre-designed lessons and teacher oversight limit what the model discusses with students.
