Robin Radar MAX at Maasvlakte 2
A Dutch bird radar that can automatically stop wind turbines at Maasvlakte 2 when risky birds approach.
About
MAX tracks birds around the wind farm at Maasvlakte 2 and classifies their flight paths. When a protected species or a large group comes dangerously close to the turbines, the system can temporarily shut down one turbine or the entire park. The connection has been operational since March 2025. Experts set the rules and review the alerts; public long-term proof of a reduction in collisions does not yet exist.
AI factor
The radar and classification models track many flight movements simultaneously, day and night. People set the risk thresholds and assess afterwards whether the system intervened correctly.
