Quartz Solar Van by Open Climate Fix
Operational AI forecasting that shows the British grid operator how much solar power is likely to be available in the coming hours.
About
Open Climate Fix combines satellite imagery of cloud cover, weather forecasts, and current solar production into a continuously updated forecast. The service runs in the control room of the UK's National Energy System Operator. According to the completed project report, the forecast for zero to eight hours ahead was about 40 percent more accurate than the benchmarks used and more than 99.5 percent available. This reduces uncertainty in balancing the grid; the actual savings in cost and emissions have not yet been demonstrated separately.
AI factor
Machine-learning models recognize the movement and development of clouds and translate this into expected solar power. Grid operators use the probabilistic forecast alongside other information to plan reserve capacity and production.
