Project Guacamaya
AI analyses satellite imagery, camera trap footage and rainforest sound to make changes in Colombia's Amazon faster visible.
About
Project Guacamaya is a collaboration between Colombian research institutions, Microsoft and Planet. Models help identify changes in satellite imagery, recognize animals on camera trap footage and organize large volumes of bioacoustic recordings. The University of the Andes reported that processing tasks could go up to ten times faster. The results support researchers and conservationists; the system does not intervene directly against deforestation or poaching.
AI factor
The area produces far more imagery and audio recordings than researchers can review manually. AI flags changes and recognizes recurring patterns, after which local experts verify the results and determine what further research requires.
