Project Green Light
AI that analyzes traffic flows and proposes timing for traffic lights.
About
Project Green Light uses anonymized traffic patterns from Google Maps to identify bottlenecks at intersections and propose adjusted traffic light timings. Traffic engineers review and activate the recommendations in their own systems. The program has been deployed in multiple cities. Available results come mainly from Google itself and are not an independent measurement of reduced emissions or faster traffic.
AI factor
The models compare large numbers of traffic movements and identify timing changes that a traffic engineer would find difficult to calculate manually for each intersection. The municipality retains control over the lights.
