Mindspark
An adaptive learning program that adjusts math and language exercises to what a student actually masters, even when that is below class level.
About
Mindspark continuously assesses what a student can do and adapts the topic and difficulty accordingly. In a randomized evaluation in poor neighborhoods of Delhi, 619 secondary school students received, or did not receive, a free place in an after-school center. After 4.5 months, the group with access scored 0.37 standard deviations higher in math and 0.23 in Hindi. The examined package consisted of 45 minutes of software plus 45 minutes of small-group guidance, so the measured effect cannot be fully attributed to the AI.
AI factor
The adaptive system estimates each student's current level of mastery and then selects explanations and tasks that fit it. A teacher remains needed for guidance, motivation, and issues outside the software.
