Insilico Medicine — rentosertib

A drug candidate for pulmonary fibrosis whose biological target and molecule were both discovered using AI.

About

Insilico Medicine used generative and predictive models to select a target for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and design a new molecule for it. Rentosertib then advanced to clinical trials. A twelve-week phase 2a study with 71 patients showed an early FVC signal at the highest dose. Sixteen participants withdrew early, including seven due to liver injury or liver dysfunction; four of those seven also used nintedanib. The small study cannot separate the effect of rentosertib from the combination. Larger, longer phase 2/3 studies are needed to confirm safety and efficacy.

AI factor

AI narrowed the search space of possible disease proteins and molecules. Laboratory research and clinical trials remain needed to prove that the chosen candidate is safe and effective.
