Hala Systems — Sentry
An alert system that warned people in Syria earlier that an airstrike was on its way.
About
Sentry combined reports from human observers, acoustic sensors, social media, and machine learning to detect possible airstrikes and distribute alerts. According to an evaluation by the Canadian government, around 2.1 million people used the system by June 2019, and hundreds of people were estimated to have been spared injury or death. It was a human-machine chain, not an autonomous weapon.
AI factor
The models quickly brought together various incomplete signals. People provided observations and assessed the context; the system helped deliver alerts to citizens earlier.
