Google Flood Hub

A public warning platform that uses AI to predict river flooding up to days in advance, even in many areas with little monitoring infrastructure.

About

Google combines hydrological models, weather forecasts, elevation data, and machine learning to predict water levels and potential flood areas. Flood Hub makes these predictions visible to citizens and aid organizations. A Nature study showed the system can deliver usable multi-day forecasts in many poorly monitored river basins; local warnings remain the primary reference.

AI factor

Hydrologists and emergency services set thresholds and actions. The model translates large volumes of weather and terrain data into local probability forecasts and can transfer knowledge between river basins.
