GAIA Initiative
Vultures equipped with lightweight transmitters and machine learning help locate animal carcasses and possible poisoning incidents early.
About
Vultures often find a carcass before people do. GAIA attaches lightweight transmitters to animals and analyzes their movement and behavior to recognize when they have likely landed at a carcass. Rangers can then carry out targeted checks for illegal poisoning, a major threat to vultures and other animals.
AI factor
The vulture acts as a natural detector and the transmitter provides position and movement data. A model classifies behavior and sends a possible location; field teams verify the incident and take samples or safety measures.
