Freenome measures methylation patterns in cell-free DNA from blood and combines these signals with machine learning. The large PREEMPT CRC study evaluated performance in people eligible for routine colorectal cancer screening. The blood test SimpleScreen CRC, validated using PREEMPT CRC data, received FDA approval on 27 July 2026 as a screening option for adults from 45 with average risk. A positive result must be followed up with a colonoscopy; the test does not replace diagnostic or surveillance colonoscopy.
AI factor
The laboratory measures many weak molecular signals that individually say little. The model combines them into a risk score; doctors and guideline makers decide how such a result is confirmed and followed up.
