ECMWF Artificial Intelligence Forecasting System
The European weather centre now runs an AI weather model operationally alongside its physics-based model and makes forecasts available as open data.

In February 2025, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts put AIFS into operational use. The data-driven model produces global weather forecasts and runs alongside the traditional Integrated Forecasting System. The forecasts are publicly available and are now also produced as an ensemble. AIFS is not a replacement for all physics-based models: meteorologists compare different systems and remain responsible for warnings and local interpretation.
AI factor
AIFS learns from decades of reanalysis and recent atmospheric conditions how weather is likely to develop. It can quickly generate a global forecast; comparison with physics-based models and observations makes the final prediction more robust.
