Digital Twin of the St. Peter's Basilica
AI helped build a precise digital twin of the St. Peter's Basilica and map areas of damage.
About
For the St. Peter's Basilica, hundreds of thousands of photos and scans were combined into a detailed 3D model. AI and photogrammetry helped align images from different angles and mark visible cracks, missing mosaic pieces, and other points of concern. Restorers use this digital twin as an additional inspection and documentation layer; the model does not make its own decisions about restoration.
AI factor
Manually merging and comparing so many images is highly time-consuming. AI helps identify patterns and possible areas of damage, after which art historians, architects, and restorers assess the images.
