Ability BCI

An experimental brain implant designed to help people with severe paralysis operate a computer and communicate.

About

Ability is developing a wireless brain-computer interface for people who, due to ALS or a spinal cord injury, can barely move or speak anymore. Electrodes record signals from the motor cortex; software attempts to translate these into computer commands and communication. The first long-term clinical trial in humans has been approved, but results in patients have not yet been published.

AI factor

The participant decides what they want to do. Algorithms search complex brain signals for patterns associated with an intended movement or choice; researchers and caregivers calibrate the system and monitor safety and performance.
